Kealakekua Bay Tours
After a short hiatus, we are excited to announce that Kona Boys are again offering Kayak Tours in Kealakekua Bay. This magical tour has been our favorite since the beginning and for good reason. Kealakekua Bay is the most protected deep water bay in the Hawaiian islands and the snorkeling area near Captain Cook's monument is among the most pristine on the planet. Our tours include all of the gear you'll need for a day of kayaking and snorkeling and our guides are experienced lifeguards with exceptional knowledge of the area and Aloha to spare. We are offering group and private tours. Contact the shop for more information, or email us at info@konaboys.com.
Reminder, If you are not participating in a guided tour and you would like to land on the Captain Cook Monument side of Kealakekua Bay, you will need to get a landing permit. The application for the permit is available here.
If you do not have a permit you are still allowed to kayak and snorkel in Kealakekua Bay, however you will have to snorkel from the kayak and keep the boat under your control. If you have any questions regarding the rules, feel free to contact Kona Boys.
Kayak Rentals Still Available for Kealakekua Bay
Posted on March 22, '10 by frank carpenter.
Yes, there have been some changes at Kealakekua Bay, but you can still rent kayaks and snorkel the amazing reef in front of Captain Cooks Monument. Recent changes to rules pertaining to Kealakekua Bay have made it illegal to land kayaks without a permit on the coastline where Captain Cook’s Monument stands, however snorkeling from you kayak is allowed and makes the reef extremely accessible. If landing the kayak is more your game, we have included a link to the permit application below as well as all of the contact information you will need to to submit the application. The State is currently limiting the landing permits to 10 per day, so be sure to plan in advance. It can take 3-5 days to get a permit however we have talked to many people that were able to get the permits approved the same day they applied.
Download your Kealakekua Bay landing permit here.

New Rules for Landing at Ka'awaloa in Kealakekua Bay
Posted on February 25, '10 by frank carpenter.
The State recently announced that there are going to be “implementing new measure to improve the management of Kealakekua Bay State Historic Park”. Kona Boys is aware of the changes and want to pass along this important information regarding landing kayaks (or vessels) along the coastline at Ka’awaloa (where Capt. Cook’s Monument is located) and securing permits to do so. Kayak rentals and tours are still available at Kona Boys and if you have any questions concerning the new rules feel free to give us a call at (808) 328-1234, or call the Department of Land and Natural Resources at (808) 974-6206. Here’s the scoops…
“The Department of Land and Natural Resources is implementing new measures to improve its management of Kealakekua Bay State Historic Park. Effective February 23, 2010, the DLNR has established a new process to issue kayak or vessel landing permits for Ka’awaloa (the coastline that includes Capt. Cook’s Monument) that come with special conditions for public users that are intended to educate and provide guidance to ensure sites are protected.
Landing Permits are available online at www.hawaiistateparks.org under the heading “Announcements”. Online applications, once filled out and signed, may be either 1) emailed to Dean.H.Takebayashi@hawaii.gov, 2) mailed to the State Parks Hawai’i District Office, 3) faxed to (808) 974-6222. Call the Hilo office at (808) 974-6206 for information. Permit applications will be reviewed and upon approval, can be either emailed as a PDF, mailed or faxed back to the respective applicant. The Division of Conservation and Enforcement will be sent copies of the noncommercial permits upon approval. Any person beaching or launching a kayak or other vessel along the Ka’awaloa shoreline or mooring at the wharf adjacent to the Cook Monument, without a permit from the DLNR will be subject to civil penalty, and the kayak or vessel may be subject to confiscation. “
Here is a link to download the permits: http://www.hawaiistateparks.org/documents/hsp_kaawaloa_vessel_landing_permit1.pdf
Comments and concerns relating to the new rules and procedures can be directed to Laura Thielen (P.808-587-0400, F.808-587-0390, Laura.Thielen@hawaii.gov) and/or Linda Lingle (P. 808 586-0034, govenor.lingle@hawaii.gov)

Hang Loose,
Kona Boys
We are stoked to announce that Kona Boys was selected by the readers of West Hawaii Today as the “Best Kayak Shop 2009”, this marks our eighth year of recognition and we just want to thank all of our wonderful customers that continue to support our shop. We pride ourselves in helping people enjoy Hawaii’s waters, providing quality equipment, information, service and aloha and feel blessed to lead a lifestyle that allows us to meet so many wonderful people and spend so much time doing what we love.
2009 marked the first full year of business for our “Beach Shack” location. If you haven’t checked it out, we have a little shack on the beach at Kamakahonu Bay Bay, next to the Kailua-Kona pier. We offer all kinds of beach rentals; from SUPs (Stand Up Paddle Boards) and Kayaks, to snorkel gear, beach chairs, and umbrellas. Kamakahonu Bay is super protected so it’s a great place for the keiki (kids) to play and a wonderful access to the coastline for adults that want to take a paddle or go for a snorkel. We also offer Stand Up Paddle Board lessons from the shack for those who want to familiarize themselves with the new craze in water sports. It is an honor to spend time in such a historic place and to care for a beach that means so much to so many.
This was also a big year for our shop, we have expanded our retail to include a couple of new lines including more clothing from Hawaiian companies like Organik and Sacred Surf, more womens wear, bikinis, and all kinds of new organic cotton and bamboo Kona Boys private label gear. We continued to expand our offerings for surfboards working with local shapers like Kent and Mike Jacobs, Jon Lalanne, and Ted Kearns, and will soon be carrying Firewire Surfboards as well. We broadened our SUP quiver providing the Big Islands best selection in Stand Up Paddle Boards, new and used. We are continually learning and growing and have lots of great new products and services to roll out in the upcoming year.
Finally we’ve been working to update our website and to relaunch our online store. You’ll see that we have a bold new banner on the homepage which rotates to provide the most recent and interesting things going on at Kona Boys. We’re going to continue to post discounts and special offerings in the banner as well so check back often for the latest KB deals! The online store is starting to take shape, we’re going to keep it simple with just a few products available online. We will be offering KB limited edition (organic cotton and bamboo) tshirts, available only online, as well as the staple Rite Of Passage brand boardshorts, KB private label coffee, KB stickers and more, so keep us in mind for your island style holiday shopping or if you need a new favorite t-shirt. If you want to get updates or learn more about Kona Boys, you can also check us out online on Facebook, Twitter, Merchant Circle, Yelp, and TripAdvisor.
